Activities –Shelter

Shelter is a major issue, since hundreds of thousands of houses were completely destroyed during the tsunami. The survivors are both mentally and physically exhausted. They need rest and protection from the elements or will fall victim to disease and dehydration. Furthermore, over a million people who are currently housed in some 1000 camps, while being protected from the elements, are not sufficiently equipped with facilities required for a longer stay. The RSDRF and other organizations have already taken measures to provide the following items:

•  Sheeting for temporary shelters
•  Tents
•  Sleeping mats, pillows, quilts, blankets and other bedding material
•  Movable toilets
•  Water pumps
•  Water tanks
•  Small Generators (1-5 KVA) and Emergency Lighting
•  Lanterns and Lamps
•  Mosquito nets for infants

The above are immediate relief requirements. Thereafter we will have to get geared with more permanent structures to accommodate relatively long stays. Thus, the need for building materials and builders. The Government of Sri Lanka is intent in allocating land for this purpose and plans will be drawn up. Thereafter we will need donors to take on the task of building. Hence if you're able to help in the construction of houses you could, at this stage give us a rough idea of the possible numbers.

Long term reconstruction
Construction Project Involving 200 New Houses

Many tsunami victims not only lost their loved ones but also lost their homes and belongings. They are currently lodged at various camps and are at a dilemma as to how they would rebuild their lives once they leave the refugee camps. RSDRF hopes to provide a permanent solution to this problem by initiating a ‘ground breaking' housing project which will integrate the following:

•  housing construction :This project will integrate a play ground, community centre, preschool / day care centre, library, co-operative, dispensary etc. The survivors could also build their houses in the land provided.

•  environmental sanitation, either in camps (if these remain) or as people rebuild their homes
